Discworld® Intellectual Property Guidelines for Fans
Last updated: 15th July, 2026
This note has been prepared by Narrativia Limited and Sir Terry Pratchett’s Estate to address common questions about rights in Sir Terry’s Discworld properties.
The rights relating to the Discworld universe are owned and administered by Dunmanifestin Limited. Narrativia Limited holds certain exclusive licences. All requests to use Discworld or other Terry Pratchett intellectual property should be addressed in the first instance to Narrativia.
Dunmanifestin Limited owns registered trademarks including DISCWORLD®, TERRY PRATCHETT, UNSEEN UNIVERSITY and others. Many character names, places, and other elements are also protected as unregistered trademarks. The text of the books is protected by copyright owned by Dunmanifestin Limited. Artwork is protected by copyright, normally owned by the artist (e.g., Paul Kidby or the Estate of Josh Kirby).
Uses we will normally object to (except by official licensees):
- Use of our trademarks or copyright material on products or packaging (e.g., t-shirts, cards, jewellery).
- Sale of toys or figurines of characters.
- Use of trademarks in product names or titles (including phrases like “Inspired by” or “Tribute to”).
- Use of trademarks as website search tags, domain names, or trading names.
- Any use suggesting or implying the item is official, authorised, or connected with the Estate or licensees (a disclaimer alone is usually insufficient).
Limited exceptions for fans
We may, at our discretion, not object to small quantities of genuine, non-commercial fan-made craft items that faithfully evoke characters or places from the books, provided there is no copyright infringement or trademark misuse as described above.
Resale of genuine, unaltered Terry Pratchett books in their original form is permitted.
Fan events and organisations
We support genuine fan-led events and gatherings provided they are clearly presented as fan activities, do not imply official endorsement, and are not run commercially (no entrance fees or unlicensed merchandise sales).
Official licensed Discworld merchandise is available on this website and through authorised retailers.
